Everyone knows orange juice is a great way to get more vitamins (Especially vitamin C) and a quick tasty way to get more fruit into your system. But does the lower cost juice from concentrate offer the same benefits as the type made from pressed or fresh fruit, or should you always by your own and make your own juice?
Concentrate.
Juice from concentrate is the most widely available and popular way of buying orange juice. In order to reduce costs shipping whole oranges or liquid juice from the countries where orange are grown - all the water is removed, and what remains is frozen. At a later date, water is reintroduced, and this is sold as concentrate fruit juice, or reconstituted fruit juice.
Fresh or squeezed Fruit Juice.
Companies who sell fresh or squeezed orange juice store the orange juice as is, but it is still heated to kill bacteria, removing some of the goodness and taste.
Home Made Fruit Juice.
Just like mom used to make - buy oranges, squeeze them, drink it.
Which is better.
The process of killing bacteria and storage means both squeezed and concentrate actually have artificial flavours and nutrients added to bring them back to the levels of fresh fruit juice. This means that obviously the best way, although unfortunately not the most low cost way - is to buy oranges and make the juice yourself.
Squeezed and concentrate orange juice both have vitamin c added to them, so you do get the vitamins, but not from the natural oranges themselves.
